In our parish in my young days when women married they retained their maiden surname.
If Kitty Flynn married Pat Callaghan "Kitty Flynn" she remained and was so called by the neighbours.
If one wished to pay her a compliment he called her Mrs Callaghan to her face, "but behind her back" she was still "Kitty Flynn".
