Travelling Folks [duchas:4359267]
In former times a great deal of travelling folk frequented my district but very few do so now. The same people have been calling for many years and most of them are very poor. The most of the travelling folk carry baskets filled with small articles including boot laces, pins, combs, hair-pins etc. Some of the richest of them carry small delph articles and glassware, but most of the people buy very

little from them. In former times people liked travellers a great deal more than they do nowadays. Generally they are not welcome nowadays in my district. The most of the travelling folk now have vans to carry them from place to place and also in which to sleep. Some of the poorer folk travel on foot or in carts and sleep in tents. Sometimes they remain a week in one place and sometimes only for a few days.

They beg all their food and clothes. They accept flour, meat, tea, sugar, milk, butter, eggs etc. They travel in families and sometimes in bands. They come to the district several times during the year. Some of them come to attend the local fair. They are specially noted for stories and for bringing news from one place to another. They tell some strange news every time they come.
