Travelling Folk [duchas:4375034]
In the summer months travelling folk visit our district. Tins sound on their backs while in their hands are baskets which contain small articles such as: prayer books, tie pins, broaches, artificial flowers, ballads, safety pins and other little articles. They go by the name of tinkers, because they are tinsmiths. It is said that there wasn't any nail to be found long enough to hang Our Lord. A tinker was looking

on and offered to make all the nails they needed. Our Lord then said "Ye shall be a wandering tribe on the face of the earth" Ever since they have been travelling and have no home. They steal things from the farm-houses near their camp such as eggs, potatoes, cabbage and hay. They travel in families and sometimes two families at a time. They most common travelling families in this district are the Collins, Maughons, Cawleys and Mc Donagh families.

These people have been calling to our house for a number of years and shall be calling till the end of time.
