The teachers in the hedge schools kept the spark of learning alive in the Irish race. Not for from where Keenagh Church now stands a hedge school was situated. It stood on the side of a little green overlooking the calm shiny waters of a brook. The hut was made of mud and stones. It had an earthen floor. Straw of heather was sometimes scattered on the floor for the comfort of the pupils. The pupils studied out of doors

He was invited to the houses of his pupils in turn. Burns was very fond of tobacco. It was very scare in those days, but still everyhold tried to get some for him. If he didn't get it he was very cross on the next day. He taught in Irish and was a very good teacher.
