St Fechin's Staff [duchas:4977963]

Saint Fechin's Staff was in possession of the Nugents of Multyfarnham. Both the Nugents of Farrenconnell and Multyfarnham were Catholics at one time and helped the priests and hid them.

It is not given in history why Saint Fechin's Staff was removed from Multyfarnham to Farrenconnell, perhaps for safety. The old people of this neighbourhood over ninety years old remember to see it.

From the day it came to Farrenconnell ill-luck followed the Nugents.

All their stock died so they got very poor and

disheartened. They asked a priest about these changes of luck and he advised them to get the staff away.

So it was returned to Multyfarnham and from then the luck changed for the better.

Some say the Staff is now in the Museum in Dublin.

Mary O'Reilly.
