Hallow E'en Customs

Many games are played on Hallow E'en. The childrens favourite game is "Snap Apple". An apple is suspended from the ceiling and each child in turn with his hands behind his back, tries to seize the apple with his mouth. This game can be also played in a different manner. An apple is placed in a tub of water, and they endeavour to seize the apple with their hands behind their backs.

Two beans are placed on the hot ashes. One bean represents a boy and the other bean represents a girl. If the two beans hop together both parties will be married. If one hops before the other they will not be married.

Four saucers are placed on the table. One contains earth, another contains water, the third contains a ring and

the fourth contains a rosary beads. A girl is blindfolded and she puts her hand into one of the saucers. If she puts her hand into the saucer containing the earth she will die soon. If she puts her hand into the saucer containing the water she will go across the sea. If she puts her hand into the saucer containing the ring she will be married within the year. If she puts her hand into the saucer containing the rosary beads she will be a nun.

Melted lead is poured through a widow's key. If the lead takes the shape of a cow the girl with marry a farmer. If it takes the shape of a ship she will marry a sailor. If it takes the shape of a sword it will marry a soldier. If it takes the shape of a horseshoe she will marry a blacksmith. If it takes the shape of a shoe she will

marry a shoemaker. If it takes the shape of a loaf of bread she will marry a baker. If it takes the shape of thread she will marry a tailor.

A girl peels an apple without breaking the skin. She then throws it over her shoulder. If the skin takes the shape of a letter that letter will be the initial of her husbands names
