My father told me that straw mats having openings to let in the light were used
Old Houses [duchas:4646899]
as doors and windows. Others had only wooden shutters which were opened in the day time and closed at night. Old floors were made of either clay, flag-stones or daub. Turf and timber were used as fuel. Colm balls are peculiar to County Leitrim they are made by hand from wet-slag and daub.
