Abstract: A collection of folklore and local history stories from Prosperous (B.), Naas (school) (Prosperous, Co. Kildare), collected as part of the Schools' Folklore Scheme, 1937-1938 under the supervision of teacher Ml. Ó Brosnacháin.

  1. The Fianna lived sometimes in a place called the Hill of Allen. (p. 417)
  2. There was a well in a place called Downings. I was a holy well. and it was blessed by a Saint called Farrington. (p. 417-418)
  3. The Fianna lived on the Hill of Allen. This hill is situated in the north of Kildare. (p. 418-419)
  4. Fionn Mac Cumhaill was very strong. It is said that he cast stones to Clane and the Curragh. (p. 419)
  5. Some distance from Allen a spot on the road is called the leap. Fionn is supposed to have jumped from the hill to this spot. (p. 419-420)
  6. St. Patrick's well is sit-uated at Barrettstown near Newbridge. (p. 420-421)
  7. In 1798 there was a great battle in Prosperous. A great barracks stood in the midst of the village. (p. 421-422)
  8. Naas is a very historical town. During the Insurrection of 1798 the insurgents were badly beaten. (p. 423)

  21. In Rathcoffey there is the ruins of a great castle. Hamilton Rowan lived there. (p. 433-434)

  23. There were foctroies in Prosperous long ago, a hat factory, a cotton factory, and a linen factory. (p. 437)

  25. There is a well in Landenstown and it was used by a woman named Mrs Digby who lived there. (p. 438)
  26. There is a cross about a quarter of a mile from Prosperous and it is called Hatter's Cross... (p. 438)
  27. To see one magpie on a journey is said to be lucky but to see two magpies is unlucky. (p. 439)
  28. There were many battles in Prosperous in the time of the Old Britons. (p. 439-440)
  29. In Curryhills there was a linen factory. Between Sallins and Landenstown there is a well and... (p. 441)
  30. There lived in Killybegs long ago a Priest named Rev. Father Higgins. (p. 441)
  31. There is a cure used by an old woman in Prosperous for a sore throat. (p. 442)
  32. There is a castle in Blackwood which belonged to the Fitzgeralds of Leinster. (p. 442)
  33. Cornelius Kay was a hadge school master in Prosperous and he was a great poet. (p. 442-443)
  34. In Conleth was a great metal worker. His great work is still to be seen. (p. 444)
  35. At the South of Newbridge at a place called Pollardstown there is a prince's grave. (p. 444)
  36. Before the Insurrection of Prosperous there were rich industries in the town... (p. 444-445)
  37. There are many wells in Co. Kildare such as, Father Moore's Well, St. Brigid's Well, and (their) there is also... (p. 445-446)
  38. After the Insurrection of 1798 the rebels assembled near the Curragh at Gibbet-Rath. (p. 446-447)
