There are Raths or fairy forts all over Eire. In our district they are called raths. The people who live near the raths or who own the land where they are built are careful not to disturb them. If they plough the field where they are, they never go near the rath because they say the fairies live there and if they disturb them some ill will happen or bad luck will follow. According to Thomas Gahan there is a famous rath in Ballyleigh called the rath of Yoc. It is circular in shape. There was a grove near it at one time and also a chapel. It is likely, that all these forts were really holy places or places of worship.
