Although formerly more wide-spread the custom is now strongest in the western areas. Each community lights its own fire at a public place such as a crossroads, etc. The fire is lit as night falls and the occasion is one of celebration and enjoyment. It is likely that the fire has its origins in older customs which related to the feast of Midsummer.
