Colum Mac Gille Eathain started work as an assistant cataloguer with the Commission in 1945, and was then appointed as a full-time collector. He worked in Connemara in 1946 and collected for the Commission in the Scottish Gaeltacht from 1946 to 1950. He was collector and cataloguer for the School of the Scottish Studies in Edinburgh from 1950 until his death. The commission was instrumental in the establishment of the School of Scottish Studies.
