Research Project Description
The project focuses on Irish women writers of children’s fiction between 1870 and 1940 utilising collections in University College Dublin and the National Library of Ireland, the John Manning Collection of Children’s Books (UCD Special Collections) and the Máirín Cregan Papers (National Library of Ireland). The project explores the role children’s literature played in constructions of national identity, particularly from a gendered perspective. It explores the ways in which children’s books by these writers map contemporary assumptions about femininity, Irishness, childhood, and consumer culture.
Acknowledgements
The research team would like to extend their thanks to the staff in UCD Special Collections, to the staff of Children’s Books Ireland, to the staff at the National Library of Ireland, and to the family of Máirín Cregan.
Research Outputs
A workshop 'Writer's Lives and Archives,' featuring Irish children’s writer Oisin McGann, was held on 2nd December 2009 in the National Library of Ireland in conjunction with Children’s Books Ireland.
Note
A symposium entitled 'Irish Children's Literature and Culture' was held in the UCD Humanities Institute of Ireland on 5th December 2009. Speakers included Mary Shine Thompson, Valerie Coghlan, Celia Keenan, Éilis Ní Dhuibhne, Patricia Kennon, Ciara Ní Bhroin, Oisin McGann, and Susan Cahill.
Scope and Content
The extracts for this project have been selected from the John Manning Collection, a collection of almost 400 children's books by English and Irish authors mainly published between 1870 and 1920. The Manning collection also includes several Boy's Own Paper and Girl's Own Paper annuals, as well as texts by Irish writers L.T. Meade, Katharine Tynan, Rosa Mulholland, and Sophia Rosamond Praeger. The extracts chosen here are from Irish women writers who published children's books between 1870-1920. The Manning Collection list provided here details the material, which was donated to UCD by Dubliner John Manning between 1977 and 1984.
Note
Material is also included in relation to the work and personal papers of Maírín Cregan, whose books, stories and plays for children were published in the 1930s and 1940s. The Maírín Cregan papers are held in the National Library of Ireland.
Arrangement of the Collection
The collection is arranged in three sections. The first section consists of the digitised novel and short story extracts (presented in alphabetical order); the second section comprises the excel catalogue of the Manning Collection; and the third section includes reference material compiled from the Máirín Cregan papers in the National Library of Ireland.
