The typescript caption below the illustration reads 'Pleuritis'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Effusion of lymph into pleura in case of C.r Carey aet 32. Diffuse inflame.t. see case book p.407. Pleuritis: Christopher Carey aet 32, on the 7th Feb.y/38 was struck by the shaft of a car on the right breast. 9th he had stitch in the side & was bled from the median-cephalic vein. 12th he had a rigor which lasted for two hours. 13th the arm became swollen & very painful. He was admitted on the 19th, labouring under the symptoms of diffuse inflammation, the wound of the vein had not closed, the pain & swelling extended to the shoulder & front of the chest, a painful fluctuating tumour was found near the head of the right fibula & another on inner side of left elbow. He had cough, tendency to shiver, cold extremities, the [?] [?] bronchitis & pneumonia, he became delirious on the 20th & had profuse perspirations. He died on the 21st. See drawing N.404'.
