The Irish Poetry Reading Collection, which forms part of the Irish Poetry Reading Archive, is a central repository for readings by Irish poets, in both the English and the Irish language. This collection aims to capture and preserve the rich and diverse landscape of poetry in Ireland, and includes the voices of: established poets; emerging poets; performance poets; avant-garde poets; English and Irish language poets; and Irish diaspora poets. Many of the readings are accompanied by handwritten or typed presentation copies of the poem, created by the poet especially for the reading.

A selection of extracts from printed books from the Manning Collection held in UCD Special Collections along with reference information on the Manning Collection (UCD) and on the Maírín Cregan Papers (National Library of Ireland).

This is a collection of six bound volumes of Irish newspapers and ephemera covering the period 1916 to 1940. The majority of the material in four of the six volumes is from the Civil War period, 1922-23. These four volumes include long runs of anti-treaty newspapers including the Daily Sheet, the Daily Bulletin and Poblacht na h-Eireann and issues of other titles such as The Fenian and The Flame. In addition, there are many anti-treaty ephemeral items such as leaflets and short pamphlets. Bound in with these Civil War materials are occasional items from 1916, the War of Independence and the early years of the Free State. In addition to the four volumes pertaining to the Civil War era, one of the volumes contains a weekly newspaper entitled Nationality, edited by Arthur Griffith, covering the period September 1917 to February 1919 and another volume includes issues of the Republican Newspaper War News from the period 1939-40.

Correspondence between John O'Donovan (1809-1861), and, principally, William Reeves (1815-1892): eighty letters (1832-1860) and twenty-six undated note fragments.

The newspaper, called ‘The Kangaroo’, was produced on board the troopship HMAT Afric, which carried men of the 1st battalion Australian Imperial Force (AIF), from its departure from Sydney on the 19th October 1914 until its arrival in Alexandria, Egypt on the 3rd December 1914. The newspaper was edited by Walter Wade, an Irish-born soldier in the AIF. This collection represents twenty-three issues of the paper, comprising of most issues published, along with variant editions and duplicates. There are gaps in the daily publication record, but this collection does have copies that are absent from other nationally significant holdings of ‘The Kangaroo’ extant in Australian libraries.

A collection of material relating to Kevin Barry, who was executed for his part in the killing of three British soldiers in 1920. The collection includes material associated with his days at Belvedere College, his year as a medical student in UCD, and his brief time in custody at Mountjoy Prison before execution. The majority of the collection is composed of material gathered by Kathy Barry Maloney, Barry's sister, after his death.

A collection of material related to the Easter Rising 1916 from the IBVM (Loreto) Institute & Irish Province Archives, including contemporaneous accounts of the Rising as observed by the Loreto Sisters at St Stephen’s Green Dublin and Loreto Abbey Rathfarnham. The material is collated from three separate Loreto archival collections: the community archives of Loreto Abbey Rathfarnham; Loreto College, 53 St Stephen’s Green; and M. Michael Corcoran IBVM, Superior General 1888 – 1918. The collection comprises of two manuscript community annals, a military permit, picture postcards from Loreto Abbey Rathfarnham and Loreto College, 53 St Stephen’s Green, and a typed letter from M. Michael Corcoran IBVM, Superior General 1888 – 1918.

Correspondence relating to Fr Luke Wadding OFM and the Irish Friars Minor at St. Isidore’s College, Rome, on ecclesiastical and political matters; and concerning his interests as historian of the Franciscan Order.

The M. Michael Corcoran’s Photograph Albums contain photographs taken by Mother Michael Corcoran IBVM (1846-1927), Superior General of the Loreto Sisters. M. Michael was a self-taught photographer who used her camera to capture religious sisters, ministries, pupils, employees and friends of Loreto communities in Ireland and across the world. In 1902, M. Michael became the first Superior General to undertake a visitation of the IBVM communities in India and Australia and her photographic collection consists mainly of images captured during this international visitation. The albums also include images of Loreto Abbey, Rathfarnham taken in 1905 and images of Loreto Convent, Balbriggan taken between 1906 and 1907. Her albums should be of interest to anyone interested in M. Michael Corcoran IBVM as an educator or as IBVM Superior General, researchers interested in early 20th century photography, local history, early 20th century convent or school life in Ireland, and in foreign provinces.

Nine Thom’s maps of the city and environs of Dublin from the collection of the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy (GPEP). Printed by the Ordnance Survey for the Dublin publisher Alexander Thom from the six-inch map sheets 18 and 22, and dating from the late 19th century. The maps have been annotated with hand written dates made by Dr. Arnold Horner, formerly of GPEP, and based on information in J.H. Andrew’s article "Medium and message in early six-inch Irish Ordnance Maps: the case of Dublin city". These loose maps were originally published in Thom’s annual Almanac and Official Directory.

Minor Harbours of Ireland, an Irish Research Council-funded project by UCD School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, examines the evolution of maritime engineering in small harbours in Ireland from the seventeenth century to the present. This collection records the construction and evolution of a selection of these minor harbours and includes short historical descriptions, onsite LiDAR scans, photographic site surveys, and exhibition posters for each harbour.

A collection of mainly 19th century maps of almost 150 cities, towns, and villages in the Republic of Ireland. Most are Town Plans which were surveyed at either five or ten foot to one mile scale between 1837 and 1896. The remainder were produced by enlargement of the 1/2500 maps between 1892 and 1911.

Letters from correspondents primarily in the British Isles, but also from North America and the Middle East, encompassing a wide range of antiquarian concerns including archaeological finds, anatomy, sigillography, topography, numismatics, and Frazer's collection of autographs and prints.

Correspondence relating to O'Curry's work with the Ordnance Survey and the Royal Irish Academy and general correspondence on antiquarian, genealogical, linguistic and literary matters; correspondence as Professor of Archaeology and Ancient Irish History in the Catholic University, mainly concerning his academic and research interests; some personal correspondence, and personal financial and family documents.

Textual and visual material consisting mainly of notes, drawings and plans, documenting early Christian Irish art, its inspiration and the extent of its influence in Europe, in areas including architecture, sculpture, manuscripts, metalwork, ivory and textiles.

The Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive (IVRLA) is a digitisation project launched in UCD in January 2005. The project was conceived as a means to increase and facilitate access to UCD’s cultural heritage repositories through the adoption of digitisation technologies.

This collection comprises the papers and correspondence of the Kevin Barry Memorial Committee. The Committee was formed to raise funds to create a memorial to Kevin Barry (20 January 1902–1 November 1920). Barry, a medical student at University College Dublin, was executed for his part in an ambush which resulted in the deaths of three British Army officers. The Committee commissioned Harry Clarke Stained Glass Limited to create a stained glass window dedicated to Kevin Barry and the other students and graduates of University College Dublin who lost their lives in the struggle for Irish Independence. The window, designed by Richard King, was erected in Earlsfort Terrace and unveiled on 1 November 1934. In 2010, the window was conserved, restored and relocated in the Charles Institute at Belfield, the current campus of University College Dublin.

Pat was an Irish three-penny weekly satirical periodical, published and printed in Dublin by W. P. Swan. It was founded in 1879 by political cartoonist and illustrator John Fergus O'Hea, and writer and editor Edwin Hamilton. Hamilton and O'Hea had previously worked on the comic magazine Zozimus, the magazine Ireland's Eye, and the weekly newspaper Zoz. Pat was edited by Hamilton, with illustrations provided by O'Hea and other artists. Publishing ceased temporarily from September 1880 until January 1881, when O'Hea was joined by cartoonist Thomas Fitzpatrick. A summary printed in a number of issues describes the content as "artistic, literary, humorous, satirical… Each number contains, printed in several colours, one double page cartoon and one or more full page cartoons, besides numerous uncoloured sketches and minor illustrations. The literary matter, supplied by Irish writers of recognised ability, will treat of current events, not only in Dublin, but in all parts of Ireland". Regular features included a diary of the character Pat, reports on theatre productions in Dublin, descriptions of Dublin streets and areas, and travel notes from around Ireland and London. The illustrations cover many of the major political, social, and cultural issues of the period. Pat ceased publication in March 1883 and was followed by the short-lived magazine The Irish Diamond.
