Chronic orchitis


Watercolour medical illustration depicting chronic orchitis in a baby. It has the alternative reference numbers 1157 and P5 on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is A.a.22. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 3 reads 'Chronic orchitis. James Kirwan aet 20 months. Dr Fleming'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Mr Fleming's. James Kirwan 1 year & 8 months. Granular testicular. The subject of this case was the son of a soldier in one of the Infantry Rg.s garrisoned at the Royal Barracks in this city. He and the mother of the child appeared in excellent health, the father had primary syphilis some years back, did not use mercury, and never had any visible secondary symptoms. The mother had not had any symptoms of disease. This was their first child that had shown urinary irritation. The testicles both became inflamed. The attack was of the [?] character. The condition of the right testicle is marked in the drawing, that of the left, most characteristics of the [?] and "granular testicular". The mother brought the child to the [?] and I had him transferred to the Richmond Hosp.'.
