RT index T1 Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) 19th Century Historical Maps A1 Ordnance Survey of Ireland A1 Ordnance Survey (Ireland) PB Ordnance Survey of Ireland PP Dublin, Ireland YR 1837 PB Four Courts Press PP Dublin, Ireland YR 2002 NO Credits: The original printed maps were created by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland. The Ordnance Survey of Ireland was succeeded by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi). The printed maps were digitised by OSi to create the digital versions in this collection. The Ordnance Survey of Ireland is credited as the cartographer of the printed maps in this collection while Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) is credited as the creator of the digital versions. NO Acquisition details: The scanned maps were provided to UCD Library by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi). NO Date details: The following types of date are used: date created refers to the survey year of the map (when given), date modified refers to the revision year of the map (when given), and date issued refers to the publication year of the map (when given). NO Scope and content: The collection contains maps for almost 150 cities, towns and villages in the Republic of Ireland. Most are Town Plans which were surveyed at either five or ten foot to one mile scale between 1837 and 1896. The remainder were produced by enlargement of the 1/2500 maps between 1892 and 1911. The large scale at which they were surveyed means that details, such as the ground floor interior plans of public buildings from churches and banks to hospitals and railway terminals, can be viewed on the maps. At street level, features include benchmarks, pillar boxes, public water pumps, troughs, hydrants, and lamp posts. Other useful information includes the parish, barony, townland, ward and municipal boundaries which are all clearly marked. Building types, such as mills, foundries, dye works, barracks, billiard rooms, galleries, tea houses, bull rings and Turkish baths, give an indication of the industrial and social activities of the population of the time. Please note that modern place names are used in the subject headings in the records. For example, to search or filter by subject for Queenstown maps, use the modern place name Cobh. NO Numbering/sequence: The sheet numbers appear on the maps in either Roman or Latin numerals. The titles containing sheet numbers in this collection reflect the numbering system printed on the map. NO Numbering/sequence: Each map has been assigned a reference number. This reference includes prefix letters indicating the County, for example GY for Galway. Suffix letters may be included which indicate the type of map. The suffix ind indicates an index, en indicates an enlarged map, and col indicates a colour map.
