Aneurism


Watercolour medical illustration depicting an aneurism and is mounted on card. It has the alternative reference number 1868 and P1A on the front. There is no Richmond Hospital Museum reference. The handwritten note under the illustration reads 'Aneurism. Anastomosis – John Bell – Cylindroid Aneurism of [??]'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'A drawing by Templeton of a corroded preparation of a pulsating aneurismal(sic) by anastomosis – the aneurismal(sic) tumour was injected by Shekleton with wax, and afterwards the [?] part was corroded & placed under glass in the museum of the R. College of Surgeons – the wax has long since mouldered into dust, but the aneurismal drawing remains, it has been magnified and I believe imitated by Connolly – as I wished to exhibit it as the meeting of the British Association meeting at Dublin 1835'.

The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 27 reads 'Aneurism of the Common Carotid. Philip Smith aet 40'. The handwritten note in the bottom left corner reads 'Philip Smith aet 40' and under the illustration reads 'Aneurism Common Carotid'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Large aneurism of the right common carotid artery, result unknown. Ba.18. Philip Smith 40'.
