Fatty degeneration of kidney


Watercolour medical illustration depicting fatty degeneration of the kidney. It has the alternative reference number 1659, 86 and P6A on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is A.b.3. The entry for this reference in P263/1 pg. 6 reads 'Sacculated condition of the bladder. Js Redmond aet 50. Dr Fleming'. The handwritten note in the bottom left corner reads 'Margaret Newman aet 90'. The handwritten note on the back reads '[?] Fatty degeneration of the kidney. The heart had undergone the same alteration & its left ventricle had given way. The blood contained a large quantity of [?] oil. See Dublin Journal Vol. 9.p.411 & Catalogue of Preparations p.415'. The writing has been cut off in the bottom left corner. Therefore what remains reads '…[?]ation of the kidney. Journal Vol 9'.

Suppuration and sloughing in a case of long-contained disease of the prostate gland'.

Small-pox with purpura haemorrhagica


Watercolour medical illustration depicting malignant disease of the bladder. It has the alternative reference number 1331, 27b and P6A on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is A.b.1. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 6 reads 'Malignant disease of the bladder. Aet 60. Dr Hutton', however the typescript note on the back begins 'Small-pox with purpura haemorrhagica. Dr Gordon'. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly Del.t'. A feint handwritten note at the bottom reads 'Explanation of block in substance of kidney [?]'. Includes stamp of Thomas Creswick papermakers in bottom right corner.

Diseased kidney

The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 6 reads 'Calculus in the bladder, extra-renal absorp. Jn McCann aet 5. Dr Hutton'. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly Del.t'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Dilated capsule laid open exposing the diseased kidney. The styles indicate fistulous openings from scrofulous sinuses in the substance of this gland to the interior of the sac – also an opening of communication between the sac and the left ureter. The 2nd ary substance of this kidney laid open exposing scrofulous abscesses & sinuses'. This illustration relates to P263/116.
