Gangrene of leg from injury


Watercolour medical illustration depicting gangrene. It has the alternative reference number 1188 and P7A on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is B.a.14. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 11 reads 'Gangrene of leg from injury. Thomas Long aet 54'. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly fec.t' and in the left corner 'Tho.s Long Aet 54'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Thomas Long atet 54. Admitted into the Richmond Hospital with injury of the leg on the 1st Nov.r 1852. He was sitting on a cart in a state of intoxication, his right leg slipped between the body of the cart and the wheel which kept rubbing it for a length of time until at last the limb became caught between the spokes. There was no fracture but considerable swelling of the foot with two spots of rusty red colour were observable on admission. Gangrene supervened and extended up the limb. He died on the 25th Nov.r 1852'.
