Pleuritis & pneumonia

The handwritten note on the back reads 'Bb.4. Andrew turner. Diffuse Inflam.t See case book p. 57. Pleuritis & pneumonia. Andrew Turner aet 23 of intemperate habits, was [?] on the 6th May/36 for difficulty breathing, consequent on a severe beating he had received on the previous day. He was admitted into the hospital on the 12th, suffering from headache, debility, cough and hurried respirations, the arm in which he had been bled was covered with an erysipelatous blush, the accompanying [?] was of a typhoid character. He became worse daily, the erysipelas appeared in patches on different parts of the body, the knee joints became distended with fluid, he [?] at night. Pleuritis and pneumonia set in, his breathing became diaphragmatic, the pulse rose to 140, abdomen tympanitic, countenance haggard, twitching of the muscles when he slumbered. He died on the 26th'.

Sloughing of the cerebellum

The patient had complained of ear ache (sic) during the course of fever. After leaving hospital, he was severely attacked with it, he had nausea & delirium; purulent matter flowed from the ear, a distended swelling extended downwards from the parotid region, this was followed by severe dyspnoea and he died as from asphyxia. The mastoid process was carious & its cells destroyed. The petrous process was perforated & here the dura mater was separated from the bone and in a state of slough. Matter was diffused among the muscles of the neck. Pericarditis'.

The man lived only two days after the accident. There was extensive emphysema. The drawing represents a posterior view of the lungs, the right lung is contracted & [?] from the compression of the air which was present in the right pleural cavity & which escaped with a hissing noise when an opening was made into that cavity from wounds existed on the back of the lung which had been made by the short points of as many broken ribs. Besides air bloody serum was also found in the pleural sac. The upper lobe of the left lung was emphysematous. Under Mr Hamilton'.
