The Cloudburst of 1933 [duchas:4767818]
On a calm September evening in 1933 a cloud burst over Sconce and the rain fell for half an hour on an area of fifty acres and while the torrents lasted you would imagine it was rivers flowing down from the sky. The water ran down the mountain side bringing woth it everything removable. it brought crops from the adjoining fields and over nine tons of potatoes were found in a circular plot below Briscoli school and in the bed of the river as far as Mountrath.
The Cloudburst of 1933 [duchas:4767819]
the gravel and stones were swept from the lanes and roads and in the morning they were (drifted) on either side of the school playground. The road form Briscoli bridge up to Sconce was like a second river coming down the mountain. The flood swept Briscoli bridge with it and the road had to be fenced in till the County Council had an opportunity to get it rebuilt.
