In this district there are quantities of furze bushes and these whins used to be sold to the bakers of Dublin long ago. Bakers considered furze was the best material for heating ovens. It was supposed to give flavour to the bread. In those days bakeries were to be found only in large cities and it was only the wealthier people who could afford to have their bread baked for them.
