Severe Weather [duchas:4769805]

Every year there are at least one or two storms in this district. The storm generally take place in Autumn about the month of October or in early Spring.

I cannot obtain any accurate account of any great storm in this district. I have heard an account of a great storm which occurred in the year 1926. It lasted for a whole night. No damage was done to dwelling houses but some roofs were blown off sheds. In one place in this district a roof was blown off a cow-shed and many cattle were killed.

I cannot find any account of the Big Wind of 1839 in this district.

This district has suffered a lot from thunderstorms during the last years. There was a great storm which is kept in memory by the people. This thunderstorm occurred about 40 years ago probably in the

year 1898. It began on a Sunday and lasted for the whole day. This storm was intence. The thunder was terrific and it was accompanied by vivid flashes of lightning. A man named Adam Sutton was killed by the lightning and many cattle were lost also.

There are often great rainstorms in this district but the country does not suffer from flooding because the land is hilly and the water runs into the numerous streams and rivers.

Because this land is 900 ft. above sea level the district suffers a good deal from snowstorms. There was a great snowstorm in this district in 1932.

The snow covered the ground to the depth of four to six feet. In some places the drifts were from ten to thirteen feet deep.

This district does not suffer from drought. There is always plenty of rain and the soil is always moist.
