Local Storms - The Big Wind [duchas:4957879]

The Big Wind.

There was a great storm in the year eighteen thirty nine. About the month of October, when the potatoes were dug and the corn was stacked in the fields or in the gardens, the storm occured. During the day the wind blew very strongly, but at night it increased in strength until it became a tremendous gale. All through the night it raged and by morning the thatch was blown off the houses and stacks of corn and straw were scattered far and wide. Trees were uprooted and fences were washed away. The storm lasted until morning and as it is a general storm all over Ireland it is referred to as the night of the "Big Wind"
