Long ago it was most unusual to have

asses shod but the law is on the side of the ass now and if he walks on the public road he must have shoes. Cattle in the old days had a sort of a leather shoe for travelling long journeys to fairs especially in bad times when they were driven from fair to fair and before local fairs they were properly established. The smith makes the "pins" for the harrow but the carpenter makes the harrow. The smith makes coulthers and socks for ploughs but of late years he doesn't make ploughs ... Yes forge work is done
