The foreground is the present site of the Civic Offices: this photograph taken c1980. Founded c.1030; oldest surviving portion of building dates from 1186–c.1200; comprehensively restored 1871–78 by George Edmond Street.
The front to Cork Hill was doubled in 1862, under the supervision of William Caldbeck. The ground floor entrance porch here conceals the junction.
