Abstract: Watercolour medical illustration depicting acute oedematous laryngitis. It has the alternative reference number 1109 and P2B on the front. The Richmond Hospital Museum reference is B.e.3. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 17 reads 'Acute laryngitis supervening on chronic laryngeal disease. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly Delt' and in the bottom left corner 'Casey aet 36. Acute oedematous laryngitis supervening on chronic laryngeal disease. Whitworth Hospital'.

Scope and content
The handwritten note on the back reads 'This drawing illustrated the appearance of acute oedematous laryngitis supervening on chronic laryngeal disease. Pat.t named Casey, a male, aet 36, admitted May 12/47. He only acknowledged to having been ill for 6 weeks, when after falling into the canal he became hoarse & got a cough, which he neglected, for 10 days his breathing was very difficult. Two years previously he had syphilitic sore throat. Auscullattion [sic] gave no very satisfactory results, but immediate auscultation better than [?]. [?] "healthy [?]" was heard in both lungs, but indistinctly. There was much laryngeal distress, [?] with inspir.n, husky cough & much anxiety. Leeches & [?] with opium. 13. [?] most of the night from paroxysmal dyspnea, face [?]14. Mouth sore, [?] no relief. Dysphagia, in addition to [?] dyspnea, unable to swallow pills. Off to the left side ??15th. Much relieved. Pulse fallen from 130 to 102, swallows better & breathes with [?] ease.16th Had very severe paroxysm of dyspnea which occurred suddenly at 7 o'c. pm. Next morning as he continued unrelieved laryngotomy was performed. The relief was instantaneous & continued for 3 days when an erysipelatous [?] appeared about the wound with [?] of the breath. [?] of the face & general sinking, he died 24 hours after the appearance of these unfavourable symptoms. The drawing shows extensive laryngeal disease of long standing, cricoid & [?] cartilage [?] of a dark yellow colour and loosened extremely from their connections. Oedema of glottis & of epiglottis submucous infiltration of yellowish serum. [?] infiltrated in & [?] muscles of neck. No other evidences of "diffuse inflammation". McD.'
