Abstract: Watercolour medical illustration depicting enlarged thyroid gland in a man. It has the alternative reference number 1296, 133 and P2A on the front. There is no Richmond Hospital Museum reference. Below the illustration is written 'Enlarged thyroid gland'. The handwritten note on the back begins 'Bronchocele preceded and accompanied by violent palpitations and general arterial excitement, aneurismal [sic] [?] & [?]'.

Scope and content
The full handwritten note on the back reads 'Bronchocele preceded and accompanied by violent palpitations and general arterial excitement, aneurismal [sic] [?] & [?]. John McKeown aet 48, tall, [?] & of dark complexion, applied for advice Nov 27th 1838. He was of a nervous & sensitive tempermant, he had also applied the June previous & his history & his symptoms as then taken were as follows – History that he had always been healthy, temperate & cheerful, and accustomed to laborious employment; about 7 years ago after a hard days labour & exposure to inclement weather he was attacked with violent palpitations, not preceded or accompanied by pain in the joints or cardiac region; he [?] then to obstinate constipation, he had slight vertigo, they continued for 3 months without any other symptoms and then disappeared after a sea voyage, during which he suffered much from sea sickness. He then enjoyed his usual good health for four years, at the expiration of which time he first observed a small swelling in the region of the thyroid gland. In January last, first observed a small swelling the palpitations returned & his pulse rose to & remained at 120; (cupping & the cure of digitalis gave no relief). Present Symptoms violent cardiac pulsations, debility & emaciation, eyes prominent, the two lower thirds of the neck are occupied by the enlarged thyroid gland in which there is a remarkable thrill, like that of one aneurismal [sic] varix, there is a strong pulsation in the carotid & [?] section. An intense [?] [?] exists over the tumour & in both carotids, the jugular & thyroid veins are enlarged, there was no [?]'.
