The full handwritten note on the back reads 'D.e.15 Benign osteosarcoma Eliz.th Gough aet 53. Admitted into the R.I.H Sept 30th 1834. Six years previous to which the disease began in the lower end of the femur with pain referred to the popliteal space. Fifteen months after.wds the enlargement of the bone commenced and she was never after able to bear her weight fully upon the limb. When she was admitted the tumour measured 20 inches in circumference. The corresponding parts of the opposite limb being only 12 inches. The patella was pushed outwards and fixed. Amputation. Recovery. Dr E. McDowell. Examination of tumour. Some fine injection having been pushed through the femoral artery and a section then made thr. the centre of the tumour, the lower extremity of the femur was found expanded into an irregular osseous shell of very variable thickness over which the atrophical vasti muscles were expanded. Her tumour passed backwards into the popliteal space & separated the artery from the nerve. A branch of the latter traversed the interior of the tumour for about 2 inches & then rejoined the muscle. The interior of the tumour contained a soft cheesy stertomatous matter divided into masses by spicula & lamina of bone. The patella was united to the femur near the outer condyle.
