Abstract: There are two separate watercolour illustrations on this board. They both have the same alternative reference numbers 1651 and P6A. The artist's name is in the bottom right corner 'J. Connolly fec.t'. The handwritten note relating to the first illustration is in the top left corner and reads 'Case of W.m J.s Stuart Aet 19' and the note relating to the second is in the bottom left 'Case of Pat.k McKenna Aet 25'. The handwritten notes on the back begin 'Injury to Perineum'. —

Scope and content
The full handwritten note on the back relating to Stuart's case reads 'Injury to Perineum. Contusion. Enormous extraction of blood. Laceration of urethra. Absorption of [?]. Cure – without [?] suppuration. Case – W.m James Stuart, a healthy boy, aged 19 years, was admitted into Hospital on the 5th December 1857, the 3rd day after falling astride on Merrion Brd. Rail. The appearance delineated in the drawing, these [?], under the treatment adopted the [?] of the injury subsided – on the 10th day, the catheter [?] the bladder, shortly after the injury, W.m recovered, and at the end of the third week very little [?] of [?] blood with effects was to be detected. Mr Fleming, December 1857'. The other handwritten note relating to McKenna's case reads 'Injury of Perineum. Deep lacerated wound. Bulb and adjoining portion of Urethra exposed. Tract of canal uninjured. Cure. Case – Patrick McKenna, a labourer, aged 25 years, was admitted into Hospital directly after the occurrence of the above injury. While working under a mason, he lost his footing and fell down a flight of six or eight stone steps which were [?] by many ballustrades (sic). He struck the perineum whilst his thighs were widely separated, [?] the projecting edge of the last step, whereby the wound delineated above was inflicted. He had the sensation as if the urethra was wounded, and on the 3rd day stated that urine escaped through the wound. No blood or other discharge took place from the urethra, [?] irritability of the bladder existed throughout the healing of the wound. It [?] very slow. Mr Fleming, December 1857'.
