Scope and content
The full handwritten note on the back reads 'Patrick Wallace aet 20 admitted Oct.r 6th/36 labouring under symptoms which were at first supposed to be those mainly of acute cynanche tonsillaris; he could open[?] his mouth but imperfectly, there was [?] at the left angle of the jaw & the left tonsil was enlarged & also the left [?] axillary gland. Upon the 9th day of his admission the true nature of the disease was suspected & it was ascertained that a horse with which he had for some time travelled was glandular. 15th Oct.r the left side of his face became much swollen & the eye closed by the [?] of the lid. Several [?] and spots appeared over several parts of the body & also some pustules. On the next day a vesicle filled with yellow serum was seen on the inflamed tonsil. He had raved during the night & the fever was of a typhoid character. 17th pus flowed copiously from the nostrils & numerous vesicles & pustules appeared over the body & limbs, surrounded by a red circle, outside which was an aureola of a whitish yellow colour. He dies Oct.r 18th at 4.00am. No. 399 represents the pustules, surrounded by a circle of [?], noticed on the surface of the lumps after death. See Mr Adams case book page 113'.
