The tumour layer only existed one year, the axillary glands diseased & the centre elevated, structure [? hard & firm, the axillary glands remain attached to the tumour. It was removed, it is not known whether any returned'.

Connolly fec.t' and in the bottom left corner 'Case of A.B aet 62.3'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Age 62:64, Spinster. Section of tumour removed from [breast]. Growth of slow and a painless, origins, six years previous to removal. in first four, had only attained size of small walnut. Intermediate growth, progression, until 6 weeks before operation, when most rapid. At time of removal, size of orange. Skin through stretched & barely over, [?] not identified with, surface of tumour irregularly undulated, equally irregular in consistence, [?] posterior, solid, in [?] giving distinct sensation of fluctuating, where skin almost diaphanous. Nipple of breast perfectly normal and surrounding structure equally so. No atrophy of breast, Elliptical portion of skin covering tumour, removed, also surrounding portion of breast, remained with nipple, left intact. Cystic structure of tumour remarkable, some cysts containing muddy, [?], bloody fluid, other obliterated by [?] growths, [?] from gland tissue & freedom from synophatis [sic] enlargement. Chri. Fleming 1853'.
