This collection of photographic prints forms part of the papers of Desmond FitzGerald (P80). The majority of theses photographs arise out of the Civil War but other smaller series relate to the aftermath of the Easter Rising and to the War of Independence. There are also other series of army portraits and of historical occasions photographs.

However, there is an entry in P263/1 pg. 20 that reads 'Malignant osteosarcoma of the lower jaw. Peter Manning aet 34. Dr E McDowell'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Dr McDowell's case. D.e.1. Malignant osteosarcoma of the lower jaw. Peter Manning aet. 34 admitted into the R.I.H June 23rd 1835. He stated that one month previously one of the molar teeth of the lower jaw on the right side became loose and grew sore. He has at this time an aching sensation in the bone. He left the hospital on the 26th and was re-admitted in Oct. There now existed a large tumour on the right side of the face. It projected into the mouth and had displaced the tongue. The skin was adherent to it and ulcerated. The diseased jaw bone was removed from near the lymphosis (lymphocytic leukaemia) to the articulation. Six weeks afterwds [sic] the wound being healed with the exception of a small fistulous opening a tumour formed near this opening, soon degenerated into a fungus[?] which rapidly enlarged and occasionally bled profusely, he died shortly afterwds [sic].
