The handwritten note on the back reads 'Thomas Gallagher at 60. Sections of the liver, showing numerous small scirrhous tubercles. An abscess existed in the right lobe, perhaps formed by the softening of some of the tubercles, it communicated with the gall bladder which is very small & contained a gall stone. Gallagher 60. The entry for this in P263/1 pg. 6 reads 'Encephaloid disease of bladder. Wm Cahill [?] aet 53. Dr E. McDowell'. The handwritten note on the back reads 'Encephaloid cancer of bladder & vesicula seminalis. Cancer of liver. Rectal gland free from cancer. William Cahill age 53 farmer. Admitted into hospl, almost moribund 9th October 1852. Died on 21st. Origin of disease [?] to a period of about 4 months back. First symptom, irritable bladder. [?] & dysuria. Eight or ten years previous had been the subject of studies of the urethra and had been treated by caustic application in the hospital. Origin of present illness sudden, not specially attributed to any cause. Progress agonising and most rapid. Bladder most intolerant of the [?] of urine, increasing demands for the catheter. Quantity very small. Quality most fetid, highly [?] Loaded with tenacious & bloody mucus with [?] [?], hypogastric & prisdal panis. Distinct [?] & hardness in hypogastric region. Enlargement of inguinal glands. Remarkable fullness in region of prostate and beyond it. His general aspect was most morbid. His countenance, sallow. His whole frame, emaciated. His limbs [?]. His [?], extreme. His vesical suffering [?] and uncontrollable. He died exhausted, incessantly crying out got the catheter, although not more than a few [?] of horribly fetid urine were drawn of [?[ at each introduction. Mr Fleming'.
