Scope and Content
The 402 photographs presented here form a representative selection of the photographic element of the National Folklore Collection. The entire collection consists of some 80,000 images, chiefly the work of staff of the Irish Folklore Commission and its successors. Parts of the collection were also purchased or donated by private individuals. The work of adding to the collection is ongoing. The collection is composed of negatives, transparencies, photographic prints, lantern slides and glass plates.
Note
In 1985 the Department of Irish Folklore at UCD curated an exhibition of some 170 photographs entitled I gCuimhne na nDaoine (In Memory of the People) to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the Irish Folklore Commission. This exhibition was intended to illustrate the scope and achievement of the Irish Folklore Commission’s collecting and archiving activities, from its foundation in 1935 to the establishment of its successor the Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin, in 1971.

The Commission’s holdings are now part of the National Folklore Collection, within the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Irish Folklore and Linguistics.

In addition to this particular exhibition, researchers are invited to browse a further sample of images of Irish life and the cultural landscape from the National Folklore Collection. These photographs are mostly nitrate negatives dating from the 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s which have been digitized in recent years.

The National Folklore Commission was the body responsible for the collection until 1971 when it was replaced by the Department of Irish Folklore and incorporated into University College Dublin.
Arrangement of the Collection
Like its manuscript and audio collections, the photographic collection is arranged according to the system of classification outlined by Seán Ó Súilleabháin in his A Handbook of Irish Folklore (see the list of subject headings below). The majority of the images in the collection have been indexed, and a database has been created to facilitate the work of researchers. The IVRLA has incorporated the NFC classification system and has added additional subject headings.
